 In Blog, Weekly Roundup

Here’s what we have for you in the past two weeks:

    • Want something inspiring: Activists put up no Catcall zone signs up in NYC and Philly! Wouldn’t that be good for the Indian bazaars? http://feministing.com/2015/04/16/activists-put-up-no-catcall-zone-street-signs-in-nyc-and-philly/

    • An inspiring project from India > “Everything begins with water. When you don’t have clean water, girls drop out of school. People get sick and malnourished.” Raju’s nonprofit taps solar power to run water-treatment plants, then sends the waste water to local toilets. • Here is something that got us really angry:
While some of these are quite true – one of them is really biting us & feminists across the country. If a woman sleeps outside marriage (which could mean adultery, an open relationship or sex before marriage) then it is her choice but if a woman does it – then he is a cheat. Frankly, this is ridiculous. Feminism is about equality so it only asks for the SAME rights as men. If a man can be a cheat, so can a woman. If a man can have sex before marriage, for fun or during dating, then so can a woman and she should not be called a slut for that. If two consenting adults engage in an open relationship – then that’s nobody’s business. We need to accept women as humans; not angels, not harlots – just human. The hypocrisy is in calling a woman out for doing something that when a man does, nobody bats an eyelash.

    • Our thoughts on the “My Family Raped Me” video:
Rape must not be used as a metaphor for everyday misogyny and cruelty. We know that the creators of this video probably wanted to bring light to other issues women face in India and wanted society to have an uproar about it the same way people do about rape BUT using the word ‘rape’ in a context where it is literally what is being said is the same as using it as a proxy for humiliation “team x raped the hell out of team y”. It belittles the trauma for rape survivors and is unnecessary. Let’s call domestic violence – domestic violence. Lets call sexual harassment – sexual harassment.
